Brand Perception Survey: Questions, Metrics and Tools

A brand perception survey measures what people know, think and feel about your brand compared with competitors: awareness, consideration, associations, quality, value and likelihood to recommend. Use a fixed questionnaire on a consistent sample to track it. Trackers such as Tracksuit, Latana, YouGov BrandIndex and Morning Consult measure real people over time; Minds lets you test positioning and wording on a simulated Audience before you field.

A brand perception survey measures what people know, think and feel about your brand compared with its competitors. It answers questions like: do people in our category know us, would they consider us, what do they think we stand for, and is that moving in the right direction? This guide covers the metrics that matter, 15 example questions, how many respondents you need, the main brand tracking tools with prices checked on October 3, 2026, and where AI fits. Minds is our product; we say clearly where a real tracker is the right tool.

The metrics that matter

Most brand surveys follow the path from knowing a brand to choosing it, then add how the brand is seen. YouGov BrandIndex, for example, tracks 16 daily metrics including purchase-funnel measures such as consideration and purchase intent, and perception measures such as impression, quality, value, reputation and recommendation (YouGov). Qualtrics lists aided and unaided awareness, consideration, purchase intent, loyalty, NPS and brand associations as its brand tracking measures (Qualtrics). Kantar's BrandZ ranking measures whether a brand is meaningful, different and salient (Kantar).

15 brand perception survey questions

Awareness and familiarity:

  1. When you think of category, which brands come to mind? (open)

  3. How familiar are you with each brand? (scale: never heard of it to know it well)

Funnel:

  1. Which of these brands would you consider for your next purchase? (multiselect)
  2. Which one would you choose first? (single choice)
  3. Which have you bought in the last 12 months? (multiselect)

Associations and image:

  1. Which brands, if any, do you associate with each statement? (grid: good value, high quality, innovative, trustworthy, for people like me)

  3. How would you rate brand on quality? (scale)
  4. How would you rate brand on value for money? (scale)

Advocacy and loyalty:

  2. If brand were no longer available, how would you feel? (scale)

Open and diagnostic:

  1. In a few words, what does brand stand for? (open)
  2. What, if anything, would stop you from choosing brand? (open)
  3. Which brand do you think is most different from the others, and why? (open)

Randomise brand order, keep wording identical between waves, and ask awareness before showing any brand names, or you will inflate it.

How many respondents you need

Brand tracking is about change, so the sample must be large enough to see the change you care about. For a simple random sample, the margin of error at 95% confidence for a 50% result is about ±4.9 points with 400 respondents and about ±3.1 points with 1,000. Online panels are not simple random samples; Pew Research Center found opt-in samples averaged 5.8 points of error against benchmarks, about twice that of probability panels (Pew Research Center). Keep the sample source constant between waves so that bias at least stays stable.

Where Minds fits

Minds does not track what real people think of your brand today. It helps before and around a tracker:

  • Pre-test positioning. Show three positioning statements, taglines or brand stories to a simulated Audience of your category buyers and compare appeal, clarity and associations by segment.
  • Draft and check the questionnaire. Run the brand survey on an Audience first to catch confusing statements and missing answer options.
  • Explore a new market. Ask open questions about what matters in the category before you pay for a tracker in that country.
  • Compare segments quickly. See how heavy users, lapsed buyers or a competitor's customers might react to a change.

Minds is the end-to-end platform for commercial synthetic research, so the same Study can combine open questions, association grids with multiselect, rating scales and methods such as MaxDiff or key driver analysis on the simulated answers. Because the answers are simulated, Minds scores each Audience against real published surveys or your own past survey files, with a score out of 100 and a 95% range per survey. Your last brand-tracker wave is a good validation file.

Limits and validation

  • A simulated Audience cannot tell you your current awareness or market share; only a survey of real people can.
  • Awareness is especially hard to simulate for small or new brands, because there is little public evidence about them.
  • Use the same sample source and wording across tracker waves; changing either can look like a brand change.
  • Treat social listening and review mining as a complement: they show what vocal people say, not what the category thinks.
  • Minds' limits: answers are simulated and directional; validation needs a fitting published or own survey and is a paid-plan feature; the Free plan is up to 60 synthetic responses a month.

A simple brand research plan

  1. Define the category, the competitor set and the audience you want to win.
  2. Draft the questions above and test them on a simulated Audience in Minds.
  3. Pick a tracker or panel and field a benchmark wave with real respondents.
  4. Validate your Audience against that wave, then use it to pre-test the next campaign's positioning.
  5. Repeat the real wave quarterly or after major campaigns, with identical wording.

Frequently asked questions

What is a brand perception survey?

A survey that measures how people see your brand compared with competitors: whether they know it, would consider it, what they associate with it, and how they rate its quality and value. Run with the same questions and sample design over time, it becomes a brand tracker.

What questions should a brand perception survey include?

Start with unaided awareness (which brands come to mind), aided awareness, familiarity, consideration and preference, then associations (which brands fit each statement), ratings of quality, value and trust, likelihood to recommend, and one open question about what the brand stands for. Keep the competitor list and wording fixed between waves.

How many respondents do I need for a brand perception survey?

Enough to see the changes you care about. With a simple random sample, 400 respondents give a margin of error of about 4.9 points at 95% confidence and 1,000 about 3.1 points. Small brands with low awareness need larger samples, because few respondents can rate them.

How much does brand tracking cost?

As of October 2026, Tracksuit starts at 19,500 USD and Latana at 7,900 EUR per market and year; YouGov BrandIndex, Morning Consult, Kantar and Qualtrics quote on request. Qualtrics cites 15,000 to 75,000 USD as the cost of a single agency brand study.

Can AI measure brand perception?

AI can simulate how a defined audience is likely to react to your brand and positioning, which is useful to test messages and survey wording before fieldwork. It cannot measure what real people currently think. Minds scores each simulated Audience against real survey data so you can see how far to trust it.
